Improved Income Support for Unpaid Carers Coming This Spring

Unpaid carers across the UK, including thousands here in Swindon, are set to receive a welcome increase in financial support from April 2026. These national changes, announced as part of the Government’s annual benefit uprating process, are designed to ease pressures on those who balance caring responsibilities with work and daily life.

This year’s uprating includes increases to Carer’s Allowance, the earnings threshold, and several linked benefits. Together, these adjustments aim to give carers greater stability and flexibility as they continue their vital work within families and communities.

Key Changes Coming in April 2026

Carer’s Allowance will rise from £83.30 to £86.45, an uplift of £3.15 per week, and while this may be a modest increase, it forms part of a continued effort to ensure carers aren’t left behind as living costs change.

Alongside this, several connected benefits will also see an uplift, with the Carer Element of Universal Credit increasing from £201.68 to £209.34 per month and the Carer Addition within Pension Credit rising from £46.40 to £48.15 per week, together offering wider financial support.

These enhancements aim to support carers of all ages, from young families to older adults caring for a partner and acknowledge the ongoing financial pressures they face.
