Be Prepared If Life Takes an Unexpected Turn

Every carer knows that quiet, unsettling question that creeps in late at night: “What would happen if I suddenly couldn’t be there?” The Emergency Card Scheme exists so that fear never has to become a crisis.

The scheme offers carers much‑needed reassurance that help will be mobilised immediately should an accident, illness, or unexpected situation prevent them from fulfilling their caring role.

A Simple Idea Making a Big Difference

At its core, the Emergency Card Scheme is simple: a personalised emergency plan, linked to a red card you carry with you at all times. But behind that simple concept lies a carefully designed support system ready to step in at a moment’s notice.

The scheme is open to all registered unpaid carers aged 18 or over and is administered locally by Swindon Carers Together in partnership with Swindon Borough Council and local health boards.

Once complete, the plan is stored securely by Swindon Borough Council. Carers then receive a distinctive red Emergency Carer Card, printed with a unique ID number that links directly to their plan.

If the cared‑for person has complex needs, or if the carer does not have any emergency contacts, trained administrators provide hands‑on support to develop a safe and effective plan. This ensures that every carer, regardless of their situation, has access to a meaningful and reliable backup system.

Why This Matters for Carers in Swindon

Unpaid carers shoulder enormous responsibility, often without formal backup. A clear, accessible emergency plan can ease pressure during unexpected moments, offering reassurance to both the carer and their dependant.

How to Register

Carers can join the Emergency Card Scheme by registering with us. Once registered, staff will guide carers through the process of creating or updating their emergency plan and issue the red emergency card.

Being a carer means putting someone else’s wellbeing at the heart of everything you do. The Emergency Card Scheme ensures that even on the worst day: a fall, a medical emergency, an unexpected incident - the person you care for is not left alone, and help is never far away.

It’s more than a card. It’s peace of mind.
