700 Marathons and a Caring Heart: Michael’s Inspiring Journey

At Swindon Carers Together, we know that caring for a loved one can be a full-time commitment, often leaving little time for personal interests and passions. Michael, registered carer since February 2020, is a wonderful example of how caring can shape our lives, while determination and resilience can keep us moving forward.

Michael is a dedicated marathon runner who took up running in 1985. Since then, he has achieved an incredible milestone, recently receiving a plaque to celebrate completing his 700th marathon!

His passion for running has continued alongside his caring responsibilities for his mum. While caring for her, Michael could only take part in marathons when she was able to access respite care. Like so many unpaid carers, he had to fit his own interests around the needs of the person he cared for, making time for himself when the opportunity arose.

Since his mum moved into a care home, Michael has been able to return to running more regularly, often competing in races every week. This year alone, he has covered more than 1,000 miles - an extraordinary achievement!

His latest challenge was the Yorkshire Marathon, which he has just completed in an impressive time of 4 hours, 44 minutes and 6 seconds, finishing second in his age group. His performance secured him a qualifying time for the 2028 Good for Age Marathon, when Michael will be almost 77 years young.

Michael’s story highlights something we see every day at Swindon Carers Together: caring responsibilities can have a significant impact on a person’s own life, including their hobbies, wellbeing and opportunities to do the things they love.

Having time to pursue a personal passion can make a real difference. Respite care and other support can help carers take a much-needed break, recharge and enjoy activities that are important to them. Michael’s dedication to both his mum and his running is truly inspiring. His story reminds us that carers have their own dreams, ambitions and lives beyond their caring role, and those things matter, too.

Everyone at Swindon Carers Together would like to congratulate Michael on his 700th marathon, his fantastic Yorkshire Marathon result and his continued commitment to running.

Well done, Michael!
